They planned it as a subdivision of modern houses, in fact, they required that the houses designed and built be modern
John Black Lee and Hugh Smallen bought the land on Chichester Rd and they planned it as a subdivision of modern houses, in fact, they required that the houses be modern. If only planning departments applied the same criteria today!
Chichester Road stands as an extraordinary testament to the vision of these young architects who descended on New Canaan with abundant confidence and creativity.
They came to challenge themselves, and indeed the entrenched conservatism of the town at the time.
Chichester Road is home to DeSilver House by John Black Lee, Becker House by Hugh Smallen, Parsons House by Hugh Smallen and the house that Hugh Smallen's designed for his own family. John Black Lee built his second home on Chichester Road in 1956 Lee House 2. Although not part of the original subdivision, The Beavan Mills House by William Pedersen was built in 1956 and is also located on Chichester Road. DeSilver House and all the modern homes on Chichester Road were designed to be part of the landscape rather than to be intrusive on the bucolic landscape.
In 1961 DeSilver House represented an opportunity for middle class America to own an architect-designed house without compromising on design or function. Today DeSilver House continues to provide modern living in the idyllic setting of New Canaan, Connecticut. With an adaptable floor plan, a fully equipped Miele kitchen and expansive outdoor entertaining patios DeSilver House was made for modern living.
Adaptability and flexibility were integral design components of DeSilver House in 1961 and this remains true today.
After all, these mid-century modern houses were designed for modern living.
DeSilver House is for private sale.
